West Monona FCCLA State Officers, Jalyn Struble – Iowa FCCLA President, Emma Jensen – Vice President of Parliamentary Law and Mrs. Janet Mann-Adviser attended the Iowa Family and Consumer Sciences Educators Conference August 1-3, 2023 at Iowa State University. On Tuesday, August 1st we attended the FCCLA New Adviser Workshop. This workshop was to jumpstart the year for Advisers with FCCLA content, fundraising, integration, program of work, upcoming conferences, Peer Education and STAR Events. Jalyn and Emma introduced the statewide service project, “Walk in Their Shoes”. This theme focuses on families who are dealing with childhood cancer and adult cancers. The officers had all of the Advisers participate in designing a shoe which is one of the Iowa Events. Iowa Events are open to all the members in FCCLA. Advisers who were chosen as winners received 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd place ribbons. On Wednesday, August 2 nd the conference opened to everyone in the Memorial Union on the Iowa State Campus. The meeting was opened by IFCSE 2023 President, Nancy Johnson, the opening general session with lunch was served in Great Hall at the Memorial Union. Guest speaker was Bill Cordes, his program is designed to support educators in building community while engaging students. Teachers walked away with a huge toolkit of ideas, activities and strategies that will rekindle the joy and passion in the world of education. The awards banquet was held on Wednesday evening at Reiman Garden in the Garden Room. At this banquet, Mrs. Janet Mann was awarded IFCSE “Educator of the Year”. On Thursday, Jalyn and Emma participated in a breakout session on FCCLA with Sherry Vogel, FCCLA State Executive Director. The officers also had a vendor table in MacKay Hall. They were able to share their success in FCCLA and promoted FCCLA to new and current Advisers. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) offers members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop skills for life—planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision making, and interpersonal communication—all necessary within the home and workplace. FCCLA is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only Career and Technical in-school Student Organization with family as its central focus.
